site.btaBSP Leader Zarkov: BSP Must Put Back Justice at Heart of Politics
Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) leader Krum Zarkov said that the lack of strong left-wing representation in the institutions is a loss not only for BSP, but for the entire Bulgarian people speaking on the Panorama programme of the Bulgarian National Television. According to him, socialists have the responsibility to put back the issue of social justice at the heart of politics.
“After resolving the issue with the rule of law, Bulgaria must also face another fundamental problem – the lack of basic social justice. In our society there is not only a lack of justice in the criminal-legal sense, but also a lack of the most basic interpersonal justice — the idea of equal pay for the efforts each person makes to be a worthy citizen,” he said.
According to Zarkov, besides corruption there is also an economic model that concentrates wealth in the hands of a few. “This is a system in which when someone wins, someone else necessarily has to lose. This system must change — politically and as a mindset. It is precisely in this political niche that we, the socialists, bear responsibility. That is why we have no right to fail, and I do not allow such a failure,” he emphasized.
Zarkov said that the processes within the BSP following the last party congress are part of a broader political trend. According to him, the party is gradually overcoming a difficult period and restoring its positions in order to take the central place that belongs to it as the only significant left-wing party in Bulgarian political life.
“I will do my job. In Bulgaria there is fertile ground for socialism, and in the BSP there is fertile ground for change. In some places it is accepted more difficultly, but overall the support is strong and the mobilization is there.”
According to him, the process of renewal does not affect only the BSP but is part of a deeper transformation in Bulgarian society and in the political system.
According to him, one of the signs of change is the gradual cracking of the “omerta” that has long dominated the judicial system and particularly the prosecution service.
“This process is also a result of the protests and it will not disappear. From now on it is the turn of the institutions and the political parties to capture the spirit of the times and stop opposing it.”
