site.btaUPDATED PM Macut: Serbia, North Macedonia Continue Successful Cooperation on Major Investment Projects

Serbian Prime Minister Djuro Macut met with Hristijan Mickoski, Prime Minister of North Macedonia, in Ohrid on Friday to discuss ways of enhancing cooperation and bilateral relations between their countries, Serbian media reported.

Macut's delegation included Mining and Energy Minister Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Aleksandra Sofronijevic and Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Minister Dragan Glamocic.

After the meeting, Macut said he was confident cooperation between Serbia and North Macedonia would continue to grow and stressed that the greatest potential lay in transport, infrastructure, energy connectivity, agriculture and tourism, Serbian public broadcaster RTS reported.

Macut said he and Mickoski had discussed a wide range of issues of importance not only to bilateral cooperation but also to the development of the region as a whole.

He highlighted the importance of joint border crossings, which have already facilitated the movement of passengers and goods by road, adding that they had also discussed major railway infrastructure projects.

"Rail transport in the Republic of North Macedonia will certainly undergo major changes with the start of works to build, upgrade and modernize the railway line linking Serbia and Greece. This will be a modern high-speed railway that will undoubtedly contribute to faster transport to Greece as well," Macut said.

Regarding energy, the two prime ministers discussed plans to build a gas interconnector, as well as preparations for the tender documentation.

Speaking about cooperation in agriculture, the Serbian prime minister referred to ongoing administrative and logistical procedures related to import permits for milk and dairy products.

Macut said there are currently four scheduled flights a week between Belgrade and Ohrid, providing a solid basis for further increasing travel and cooperation.

Summing up the visit, he said relations between the two countries were based on concrete projects and mutual economic interest, stressing that North Macedonia occupies a central place in Serbia's regional plans.

"This is not a renaissance of our relations. It is regional cooperation, to which I attach great importance. I believe the Republic of North Macedonia deserves to be Serbia's foremost economic partner and, in every respect, a transport hub with regular links. We will continue to work closely together through regular contacts, as agreed," Macut said.

The one-to-one meeting between Macut and Mickoski was followed by a working lunch attended by the two countries' delegations.

The two government leaders last met in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad on May 30 during commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the settlement of Macedonians in Serbia's autonomous province of Vojvodina.

Macut's most recent official visit to Skopje took place in early October 2025.
