site.btaBulgarian President, Turkish Foreign Minister Discuss Improving Connectivity, Ensuring Regional Security

For projects aimed at improving connectivity between Bulgaria and Turkiye to succeed, they must be viewed holistically and in the context of deeper cooperation in Southeast Europe, Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova said Thursday during a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who is on an official visit to Sofia. "This approach would stimulate both growth and security in a region whose strategic importance is growing," Iotova added, as quoted by the President's Press Secretariat. 

Fidan took part in the Summit of the South-East European Cooperation Process, hosted by Iotova in Sofia on Wednesday. Fidan and Iotova highlighted the importance of the forum and shared the view that the region’s development requires a long-term vision and the implementation of concrete joint projects.

In the context of the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, the two identified improved connectivity and ensuring security as priority areas of mutual interest. They also underlined the efforts of both countries to ensure security in the Black Sea region.

The two further noted that disruptions to traffic through the Strait of Hormuz highlight the need for alternative transport routes, reinforcing the strategic role of Southeast Europe. They emphasized the importance of strengthening transport links between Bulgaria and Turkiye, including railway infrastructure and a ferry connection between Burgas and Istanbul. Energy security and supply diversification were also among the topics discussed. Iotova stressed the importance of the Green Energy Corridor project, which will connect Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkiye, and Bulgaria, with potential links to other countries in the region.

Iotova and Fidan also highlighted the strong defence partnership. The President noted the participation of Turkish companies in the Hemus 2026 International Defence Equipment and Services Exhibition in Plovdiv. The sides also pointed to prospects for increased investment and expanded business contacts between the two countries.

Earlier in the day, Minister Hakan also met with Prime Minister Rumen Radev, who said that Bulgaria considers Turkiye not only a neighbour and friend but also a key partner in a range of areas, including security, migration, energy, and transport connectivity.
