site.btaTurkish Seismologist Shares Concerns after 4.6-Magnitude Quake in Gaziantep Region

A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Gaziantep region in southeastern Turkiye eight minutes after midnight on Saturday. According to the country's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the epicentre was near the town of Nurdagi at a depth of 7.1 km. Following the quake, Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said that, according to preliminary assessments, there had been no adverse consequences.

The tremor, however, triggered widespread panic among local residents.

Nurdagi was among the settlements hardest hit by the February 6, 2023 earthquakes centred near Kahramanmaras.

Prominent Turkish seismologist Prof. Naci Gorur said in a statement on social media, cited by Haberler, that the quake occurred between the Amanos and Dead Sea fault segments in the Kuzulok–Nurdagi area.

"The earthquake occurred at the boundary between the faults and the ends of the segments. My concern is that, under the influence of the February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, the plates may fracture," the seismologist said.
