site.btaAnalysis of Retail Prices in Mid-May Shows Price Drop in Seasonal Fruit, Moderate Rise in Vegetables

The middle of May has seen a dominant price drop in seasonal fruit and moderate appreciation of certain vegetables, according to a summary report from the regional offices for monitoring consumer prices of the Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS). The analysis covers the 21st week of 2026 and covers the country’s 28 regions.

AMIS monitors 156 products on a weekly basis. Of these, 61% did not change in price compared to the previous week of May, 26% appreciated, and 22% depreciated.

The biggest increase in retail prices was observed in lemons, by 10% to EUR 3.39 per kilogram, followed by cabbage, by 7% to EUR 1.35 per kg, kiwis, by 4% to EUR 3.12 per kg, vinegar, by 3% to EUR 1.68 per litre, radishes, by 3% to EUR 3.65 per kg, and spinach, by 3% to EUR 3.27 per kg.

The biggest drop in retail prices was seen in cherries, by 56% to EUR 6.33 per kg, and further depreciation is expected. Apricots depreciated by 22% to EUR 5.06 per kg, cucumbers by 15% to EUR 2.75 per kg, potatoes by 13% to EUR 2.45 per kg, strawberries by 11% to EUR 4.70 per kg, peaches by 10% to EUR 5.35 per kg, grapes by 10% to EUR 5.43 per kg, eggs size M by 7% to EUR 0.27 a piece, greenhouse tomatoes by 4% to EUR 3.16 per kg, and green peppers by 4% to EUR 3.84 per kg.

Of the 16 products in the basket, 15 show no weekly change. White bread remained unchanged at EUR 0.96 per loaf, type 500 flour at EUR 0.99 per kilogram, vegetable oil at EUR 2.02 per litre, rice at EUR 2.44 per kilogram, and sugar at EUR 1.25 per kilogram. 

According to the AMIS report, the cheapest regions in the country in terms of average product prices were Sofia, Pernik, Sofia Province, Kardzhali, and Silistra. Plovdiv, Smolyan, and Blagoevgrad were more expensive, particularly for cheese, meat, and yogurt. The price difference for the same products between regions reached up to 27%.
