The April Uprising is vividly present in Bulgaria's historical memory, but it is also an inspiration for artists from various fields, said Yanitsa Hristova, Managing Director of BTA's LIK magazine, during the presentation of the magazine's new issue on Monday in Koprivshtitsa. The issue is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the April Uprising in 1876 and was presented alongside a journal of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
She pointed out that the uprising's legacy is documented in BTA archives and featured in the new issue of LIK magazine. Hristova highlighted that as early as 1876, participants like icon painter Hristo Koev depicted key moments of the uprising, leaving behind a visual chronicle alongside works by Tanchо Shabanov, covering events from the Oborishte assembly to its suppression.
The uprising also found strong expression in folk culture, where unknown poets and musicians created popular songs, which spread widely among the people. Hristova also pointed out that it later inspired major musical works, while a lesser-known fact is that Jules Verne also wrote a historical novel, The Danube Pilot, about a Bulgarian participant forced to emigrate after the uprising’s defeat.
