The final public screenings of the feature film Eastern Western, directed by Bulgarian-born sisters Marina Grozdanova and Biliana Grozdanova, will take place in April in the United States, Biliana Grozdanova told BTA. The film will be screened as part of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian Film Festival in Los Angeles on April 19 and also in New York on April 23.
The film’s plot follows Igor - an immigrant and widower - who, together with his son, embarks on a dangerous journey to California with the help of American horse breeder Duncan. Along the way, the characters face harsh trials and a fateful choice that will forever change their future.
The film has been screened at international festivals, including the Sofia Film Fest, and other US cities.
Marina Grozdanova and Biliana Grozdanova share a common journey as immigrants and filmmakers working in the United States. Over the past 25 years, they have lived, studied, and worked in several countries. They left Bulgaria with their family in the early 1990s, living in Australia and Canada before settling in the US in 2000.
They began their creative careers in documentary filmmaking, focusing on stories related to music. Their first feature-length documentary, The Last Kamikazis of Heavy Metal, traces the journey of their friend Igor Galijasevic and explores the immigrant experience through the lens of heavy metal culture. The sisters’ latest and most successful project is Eastern Western - a hybrid feature-length western inspired by themes of immigration, identity, and border landscapes. In an interview with BTA, the sisters also discussed their next project, New Dawn Rising, a neo‑western shot in Montana (Northwestern Bulgaria).
