Sofia - The 2010 wheat harvest totals 3,760,550 tonnes, the Agriculture and Food Ministry said referring to data of the National Grain and Animal Feed Service (NGAFS). At September 3, the export of wheat of the new harvest amounted to 214,396 tonnes; exports between August 27 and September 3 came up to 23,467 tonnes.

Sofia - There have been some positive signs from the real economy but it is too early for optimism, Raiffeisenbank Bulgaria says in its monthly economic review about August 2010. The conclusions from the analysis were presented to reporters Tuesday.

Sofia - Road and intercity infrastructure of the worth of 290 million leva is to be built up in 75 municipalities by the middle of 2012. The funds have been ensured under the Rural Regions Development Programme (RRDP), the Agriculture State Fund said on Tuesday.

Sofia - Ankara relies on Sofia to support its membership in the EU, outgoing Turkish Ambassador Mehmet Gucuk said in a public lecture Tuesday, organized by the Atlantic Club in Bulgaria. He recalled that Turkey was the only state to support Bulgaria for its NATO membership with a adoption of a special law and expressed fears that there are state which will reject Turkey's full-fledged membership.

Sofia - From a strategic point of view the current policy is successful, visiting People's Party of Spain Honorary Chairman Jose Maria Aznar said Tuesday and expressed conviction that under the guidance of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov the objectives will be achieved. Plovdiv - A solemn prayer service at the Assumption of Mary Cathedral in Plovdiv marked the beginning of the celebrations of the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and the Ottoman province of Eastern Rumelia back in 1885. Officiating at the service were Metropolitan Nikolai of Plovdiv. After the prayer a flower tribute was paid to the monuments commemorating Zahari Stoyanov and Captain Raicho Nikolov, key leaders of the movement for unification. The celebration went on in Djumayata Square reenacting the events of September 6, 1885.

Sofia - Two young Bulgarians living in Illinois, US, have e-mailed the racket demands to representatives of the Abu Dhabi investment company Emirates Associated Business Group (EABG), the Interior Ministry said. On Sunday EABG representative Anwar Badwan contacted the General Directorate for Combatting Organized Crime (GDCOC) telling them he had received two letters the authors of which wanted to be paid a huge amount of money. Police identified the senders as A. Ts., 32, and V. S., 30. They both are fans of the motoring sports and probably did it for fun and hoping to raise media interest in the project. The competent US authorities have been informed about the case.

Sofia - World televisions have started to advertise Bulgaria, the Economy, Energy and Tourism Ministry said. Eurosport, Euronews, the National Geographic Channel and Discovery Channel will be showing spots that advertise Bulgaria's winter and summer resorts, the opportunities for environmental and rural tourism, its cultural heritage and historical and architectural landmarks, spa complexes and beautiful nature.

Sliven - The Bulgarian rally championship has news leaders. The Donchev Sport crew - Kroum Donchev as pilot and Peter Yordanov as navigator (Peugeot 207 S2000) won the fifth contest. The 2009 title-holders topped the general standings of the 25th edition of Rally Sliven, finishing 6:02 minutes ahead the Marco Tempestini/Dorin Pulpea Italian-Romanian crew (Peugeot 207 S2000) and 8:07 minutes ahead Etar Racing Team Ivan Genchev/Martin Koev (Fiat Punto).

Brussels - The European Commission (EC) expresses concern over the delay in the implementation of projects under the programme for territorial cooperation between Bulgaria and Greece, the press service of the delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists to the European Parliament said. The Commission is greatly concerned over the delay in evaluating and selecting the projects, a process which usually takes about three months. Now, ten months after the deadline, no project has been selected, says a letter which Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for Regional Policy, sent in reply to a written enquiry submitted by Ivailo Kalfin, Bulgarian MEP of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament.

Ohrid - The anniversary of last year's tragic incident, in which 15 Bulgarian tourists drowned in Lake Ohrid, was marked with a commemorative service held at the St Nicholas Gerakomia and a visit to the place of the accident. The families of the victims arrived in Ohrid together with Pirdop Mayor Antoaneta Ilieva. They visited the place where the "Ilinden" boat sank a year ago and paid a flower tribute to the commemorative plaque installed at the beginning of the pier.The "Ilinden" boat sank on september 5, 2009 in Lake Ohrid at about 250 m off the shore. Fifteen tourists, all of them Bulgarian citizens, drowned.

Sopot - PM Boyko Borissov inaugurated a waste water treatment plant at Sopot on Sunday. The facility will service over 12,000 people who will use water of very high quality, Borissov said at the inauguration ceremony. The properties of the water coming from the treatment plant are better than those of the potable water in most population centres thanks to the state-of-the-art technology the plant uses, Borissov said. The building of the plant was financed under Operational Programme Environment and cost 18 million leva.

Varna, on the Black Sea - At least 100 of Bulgaria's 264 municipalities have indicated that they can make kindergarten attendance compulsory for 5-year-olds, Education, Youth and Science Minister Sergei Ignatov said on Saturday. He said that his Ministry has 7.5 million leva to spend on the kids' education and 1.5 million leva to subsidize the transportation of those who need to travel long distances to their kindergartens. "This measure will become compulsory in 2012," Ignatov said.

Varna, on the Black Sea - "A 3.5 per cent rate of economic growth in 2011 is not impossible to achieve," Bulgarian Economy, Energy and Tourism Minister Traicho Traikov said here on Saturday. Belene, on the Danube - "We are much closer to the implementation of the Belene nuclear power plant project than we were during the last year," Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov told journalists here on Friday evening, taking a question from BTA. He was a guest at the town holiday in Belene and attended a public rally in the central square. "After a debate loaded with a lot of political passion and many emotions, I am satisfied that at the end of the day, the advocates of the development of the nuclear power industry prevailed with their arguments about the construction of Belene," the President said.

Rousse, on the Danube - Value added tax (VAT) proceeds from retail outlets in Rousse grew in August at a 7-8 per cent higher rate than the average rate in Bulgaria, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Simeon Djankov said on Saturday. This is due to an increase in shopping by Romanians, who are coming to Rousse in larger numbers after VAT in their country was increased to 24 per cent, he said.
